The Winter Classic in St. Louis!

On March 9th, 2016 the St. Louis Blues announced they will be facing the Chicago Blackhawks for the ninth annual Winter Classic. Fans went crazy as they heard these rivals were matched up; the Winter Classic will be held at Busch Stadium on January 2, 2017.

The tradition of the Winter Classic started nine years ago on January 1, 2008. The game was the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Buffalo Sabres at an outdoor stadium. The game had a record breaking crowd for the NHL with 71,217 fans attending the game. With those numbers and the success with the game, the NHL decided to schedule a game for the upcoming year, and the tradition began.

The St. Louis Blues will be the twenty-third NHL team to play an outdoor game. With that, the Blues will be celebrating their fiftieth anniversary as a franchise next year as well. Although the game is 9 months away, time will surely fly by and game day will be here before we know it. Until then, fans will be on the edge of their seats waiting for the tickets to go on sale. Cora Douglas, a student at GCHS stated “I can’t wait for the game. I’m hoping the tickets are not too pricey.” The 2016 – 2017 season will be an exciting and memorable one for the Blues. It is a great honor for the Winter Classic to be held in St. Louis. The city will be getting the recognition it finally deserves.
