“La Gardenia” is a family owned restaurant in Fairmont City near the Fairmont City race track. They have some of the best authentic Mexican food in the area. Like a typical Mexican restaurant, they give you corn chips and salsa. They also give you guacamole as well so you have a variety of flavors to choose from. We asked the owner, Jesse Hernandez, if he had any secret herbs or spices that he uses and if he had a dish that was more popular than others at his restaurant.

He said, “We generally use the herbs and spices most Mexican restaurants use. Our most popular dish is the ‘La Gardenia Fajitas.’”

It is a fairly big restaurant, with the restaurant’s name “La Gardenia” on the front of the building and on almost every booth. It is well decorated with a beautiful contrast of colors. While eating, you have the opportunity to hear unique, upbeat Mexican music. It boosts your mood if you are having a crummy day.

It is hard to be a restaurant owner while running a family. So many people come and go, and you meet many new friends, enemies, and people who you stay close with throughout the years. This is a family owned restaurant, so family members work with the owner in hopes of running a successful business. We asked Mr. Hernandez what it is like being a business owner such as the struggles that come along with it and why he chose to do this for a living.

“Some struggles are that there aren’t many people who want to work anymore. Also, the hours are really stressful because I don’t have time to see my family as much as I want to. The reason I chose to be a restaurant owner was because the opportunity was there and the community did not have a ‘good’ restaurant at the time.”

We also wondered if some days were busier than others. He said, “The busiest day of the week is Sunday, because it is the day most people have off. That’s the day they do their running around.”

“La Gardenia” is a successful family owned restaurant and it has been an honor to talk to Mr. Hernandez about his business. He is a friendly man who dedicates his time to his restaurant to make it the best he can for his customers, even if it takes time away from his family.
