The Cubs hadn’t been in the World Series since 1945, and they hadn’t won the World Series since 1908, but they finally broke the awful 108 year drought. Unfortunately for the Indians, they continue their search for a World Series title for the first time since 1948.

Cubs fans have a tendency to be extremely loyal, including two members at our high school—Mrs. Lignoul and Trevor Corey.

“Ever since I was born, my whole family has been Cubs fans.” Mrs. Lignoul stated, “I was born into Cubs nation. My grandfather was a die hard Cubs fan and I thought he was the coolest thing ever. I wanted to be just like him.” Mrs. Lignoul also said that her grandfather stated, “If it takes forever, I will wait.” After the Cubs won, she saw a necklace that said the same exact words as her grandfather. She brought flowers and that necklace to his grave.

They can win the World Series if they can keep most of the players they have now. Some will be lost to free agency, but overall they are a young group, and they get well easily.”

— Mrs. Lignoul

Both Trevor and Mrs. Lignoul have been to Wrigley Field and have seen the atmosphere. Mrs. Lignoul’s favorite memories are going to Wrigley Field with her grandpa. Trevor says his favorite memory was, “When I went with my dad and made his friend and his son Cubs fans. They even bought jerseys outside Wrigley Field. That game, Jon Lester was throwing a no hitter and had his first career hit.”

Many Cubs fans have been waiting their whole lives to see the Cubs win the World Series, so when they did, many fans were jumping with joy, including Trevor. He claims that he was so happy he cried.

Since the Cubs have only won 3 World Series titles (1907, 1908, 2016), I asked both of them for their opinions on whether or not the Cubs will only win every century. Trevor said blatantly, “They can win more than once a decade. Heck, they can win it all next year!” Mrs. Lignoul stated more of the facts, “They can win the World Series if they can keep most of the players they have now. Some will be lost to free agency, but overall they are a young group, and they get well easily.”

The Cubs have been through a lot—The Curse of the Billy Goat (William Sainis, a billy goat owner was asked to leave the stadium because of the odor of his goat during game 4 of the 1945 world series. He left yelling “The Cubs ain’t gonna win no more”), The Curse of the Black Cat in 1969 (a black cat ran across the field in a game with the Cubs in first place with a record of 84-52, but came in second in the division caused by a number of devastating losses), and the Steve Bartman incident (he reached over into the field to catch a ball that was playable and essentially caused the Cubs the NLCS pennant). All these curses have finally been broken with the title in 2016. Many more shall come, but let’s hope these Cubbies won’t have anymore curses to break next year!
