So what is electronic music? Electronic Dance Music, or EDM, is modern day techno music. There isn’t one precise genre that could be described as EDM, but a bunch of different genres that make up one big one. Dubstep, Trap, Trance, Hardstyle, Chillstep, etc. These are just a few that make up the EDM scene. Until recently electronic music has been an underground scene, but now it is blowing up all over the world.
Some people think EDM isn’t music because it’s made on a computer or that performers are just pressing play; however, that isn’t the case. Each song has many hours of hard work and time put into it. Each and every sound you hear is made by the DJ, then layered together and revised over and over until they feel it is complete. When they perform it’s not as simple as pressing play. Most DJs remix and play as they go on stage. A DJs stage can be anywhere: in an arena, your local club, even in fields and barns. EDM concerts, better known as raves, are like giant all night parties with laser light shows, projected images, smoke machines, and lots of bass. You’ve probably heard EDM music and didn’t even know it. Some of the top DJs in the world include: Skrillex, Bassnectar, Zedd, Zeds Dead, and Avicii. Those are just a few of EDM’s established artists, and more aspiring musicians are popping up every day.
EDM kicked off in the UK and quickly spread all over the world. Many people don’t realize it, but EDM is the next wave of music history. It has a chance to stand up to the legends like 70’s rock, 80’s hair metal, or the 90’s grunge that spawned Alternative music all over the world. It’s the newest genre of music and there hasn’t been anything like it before.
The following five songs are just a taste of what EDM has to offer. Click and enjoy.
