The Kick is Good

Senior Drew Grote, part of the “Grotes of Granite”, participated in the family tradition of soccer for 14 years. But who would have known that messing around on a football field with one of his buddies would change his sporting life forever? Grote said, “My brother, dad, and uncles played (soccer) in college.  My cousins also play, but I have loved football for forever; I enjoyed kicking too. I just had a bad soccer season and I went straight into kicking without thinking much of it. It was not really a hard decision.” Switching from varsity soccer to varsity football would be completely terrifying for some, but Drew went on the field open minded, brave, and confident in himself and did just fine. Drew took his soccer skills of 14 years and put them to use right away.

Grote was asked about his former soccer teammates and he said, “I’m still really good friends with all of them and I’ve cheered my heart out when I have gone to their games this year.” His friends cheer him on when on the football field as well. Football is a different sport than soccer: the fan base, the training, the practice; everything is different. Grote was asked how he thought the football team would react to him wanting to play football and he replied with, “I have always been good in the weight room among the soccer players, and when I started going to the workouts last year I did pretty good to keep up.” He fits in well at his position—soccer players have strong legs, and Drew is now the kicker for the football team.

So how did Drew find out he loved playing a sport that he had never really played? Drew told the story of becoming a kicker. “Towards the end of my soccer season last year, my friend and I went to the football field just messing around, and I kicked a 40 yard field goal, and it was a big decision if I wanted to play or not and I decided to, and it has been a great experience so far.” Drew has had a good season so far, kicking 377 yards total, averaging 47.1 yards per kick with 10 kicks total.
