A long day at school can be overwhelming. High school can be hard to handle with everything happening all at once. I’ve found that connecting with animals, especially my dog, is a good way to cope. Animals can be helpful in so many ways. They can make you happy, stress-free, and excited. Knowing this made me wonder if other people felt the same way.

When I’m stressed out, I feel like they help me relax. They also help me stay active by making me walk them, and they always put me in a good mood.”

— Miranda Mertz

Malia Smith, a student at GCHS said, “They make me feel better because when I get home they will run up to me and smile, which is the cutest thing.”

Pets don’t just help with stress or sadness, but with disorders and eye problems. According to the American Psychiatric Association, therapy dogs assist people with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and children with autism. Dogs are also known for protecting us. How do they impact our lives?  Malia Smith answered, “Well, they drive me crazy, and on other days when I’m having a bad day, I like to cuddle them.”

Many dogs and other pets show unconditional love, they sense emotions, and are loyal. Miranda Mertz, a GCHS junior, spoke on how important her dogs are to her. “They know I’m mad or upset, kind of like a friend would.” I wanted to know how Miranda’s dogs impact her life. “When I’m stressed out, I feel like they help me relax. They also help me stay active by making me walk them, and they always put me in a good mood.”

Dogs impact our lives by simply making us happy. Whenever you’re bored pets have the ability to help you be active and enjoy the outdoors. No matter what type of companion you have, animals make life a whole lot more enjoyable.
