The St Louis Cardinals are arguably one of the greatest franchises in the MLB with having 11 World Series. The Cardinals were projected to be a Playoff Contender, and a chance to change that 11 to a 12, but now they have the second worst record in the National League, and look like one of the worst teams in baseball right now. So what did happen, why are they at the bottom, and how they can improve for next season.
Well we can start on the fact that they have one of the worst pitching rotations in baseball. The Cardinals are rank 25th out of 30 teams with an overall 4.70 ERA and have gave the second most hits to opponent teams. They are still paying an old legend in Adam Wainwright money he deserve 10 years ago. It’s time for him to retire and spend some money on pitchers in the free agency. The Redbirds need to fix their pitching next year if they want to be able to contend in the playoffs next year.
Free agency is another reason they are at the bottom. The Redbirds had a good year, last year, making the playoffs, and having a decent run. So you would think they would try to make the team better, and bring in help. NO. They decide to spend no money on the big names in the market, while other teams in our division did. The Redbirds are not a young squad with Goldy and Arenado getting up in age. This offseason can not be a rebuild year, but a year to go all out and spend that money.
If the Cardinals can fix those things for next year, they have a chance to be a playoff team. The Redbirds are a top 15 hitting team, but hitting can only go so far to take a team to the playoffs. When the Cardinals are at their best, they have a good pitching rotation, and they just went heavy in free agency to build the team up. If the Cardinals want to be one of the greatest franchises in MLB history again, they gonna have to make some changes.
