The once Saint Louis Rams pro football team, after many years of debate, have finally made the move back to Los Angeles. Now the big talk is, ‘Where’s our Major League Soccer team?’ Things like this don’t magically happen, however. Major League Soccer Commissioner Don Garber has his eye set on St. Louis to expand.

Until then, all the MLS’ bandwagoners should support the local USL Pro soccer team that we already have: Saint Louis FC.”

“St. Louis has been on our radar screen as long as the league’s been in existence,” Garber said. “We’ve never been able to find the right investor, we’ve never been able to find the right stadium solution. We know that there’s a stadium possibility – whether or not that’s an MLS possibility [is] still to be seen. We know that there’s support for a facility in a great location and we’ve had discussions with those that were part of that project about bringing MLS to town. So the fact that there’s one fewer pro team there I think is a positive for our league as it relates to St. Louis.”

Right now, we have no soccer specific stadium for a team here and no major investor for this project. Missouri State Rep. Keith English has introduced legislation that would put a tax of no more than one-tenth of one percent on the ballot in St. Louis and St. Louis County. A green light from voters could generate between $10 million and $15 million annually, he said. The proposed tax would only go into effect if Major League Soccer awards the St. Louis area an expansion team by December 31, 2020.

Until then, all the MLS’ bandwagoners should support the local USL Pro soccer team that we already have: Saint Louis FC. Last year was the team’s first time in the league and they finished 9th out of 12 teams with a record of 8-11-9. This year the team will be improved due to league experience, more talented players, and the loss of lesser performing players. Although after some of the record high floods we have had, the team will return to Soccer Park in Fenton, Missouri after all the renovations have been completed. The team kicks off its home opener Saturday, April 16th at 7:30pm.
